10 things you can do to avoid diabetes*

  1. Cut back fat and calories
  2. Increase physical activity
  3. Try to walk everyday working up to 30 minutes 5 days a week,
    or split the 30 minutes into 2 or 3 walks
  4. Lose 5 to 7% of your body weight and if you are greater than 200 lbs, lose 10 to 15 lbs.
  5. Check cholesterol at least every 5 years
  6. Monitor blood pressure every office visit or at home
  7. Drink calorie-free drinks or water instead of regular soft drinks or juice
  8. Eat more vegetables and whole grains
  9. When cooking, Bake, broil, or grill your food
  10. Avoid trans fat or hydrogenated oil in food ingredients
  11. Avoid high fructose corn syrup in food ingredients
