10 things you can do to avoid diabetes*
- Cut back fat and calories
- Increase physical activity
- Try to walk everyday working up to 30 minutes 5 days a week,
or split the 30 minutes into 2 or 3 walks
- Lose 5 to 7% of your body weight and if you are greater than 200 lbs, lose 10 to 15 lbs.
- Check cholesterol at least every 5 years
- Monitor blood pressure every office visit or at home
- Drink calorie-free drinks or water instead of regular soft drinks or juice
- Eat more vegetables and whole grains
- When cooking, Bake, broil, or grill your food
- Avoid trans fat or hydrogenated oil in food ingredients
